Take Action Make a Difference

Adopt a wilderness

It is essential to maintain up-to-date information on each roadless area. The Adopt a Wilderness program allows citizens, individuals or groups, to “adopt” one of the 24 roadless areas in need of protection. Wilderness adopters attend trainings to become familiar with maps and satellite photos of their area and learn how to update and verify mapping data. Volunteers will check and document (take pictures and record information) current conditions of their adopted areas at least once per year to help keep our inventory database current.

The Adopt a Wilderness program helps citizens develop an intimate relationship with the wild lands around them. With their first-hand knowledge, Adopt a Wilderness volunteers from across the state are powerful and important spokespeople for our special wild places.
