Write to your local paper

One of the most effective ways to influence people in your community is through your local newspaper. We encourage you to write letters to the editor or op-ed pieces and voice your concern for the unprotected roadless areas of the Superior National Forest.

Keep letters short and neat. The length should be 300 words, typed and double-spaced. Handwritten letters are not accepted. Be sure to include your address and telephone number. The paper will only print the author’s name and town but the other information is needed to confirm the validity of the letter.

If you are writing in response to a recent article, your first two lines should refer to the article and your reaction to it. The second part should cut to the point of why you agree or disagree and include facts to back up your argument. The final part of your letter should restate your main point.

Guidelines for submitting letters to some Minnesota newspapers

Duluth News Tribune
Letters must include the writer’s name, address, and telephone number. Letters may be sent to letters@duluthnews.com. Letters should be 300 words or less and exclusive to the News Tribune. Letters will be edited for newspaper style and space. To allow a variety of letter writers to appear, no individual may be published more than once every 30 days.

St. Paul Pioneer Press
Letters must include the writer’s full name, address, and telephone number. Letters must be exclusive to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Send letters as plain text in the body of the e-mail, not as an attachment. Preference goes to letters under 225 words. All letters are subject to editing. Direct questions to (651) 228-5545. Minneapolis Star Tribune
Contributions from readers may be in the form of letters, extended letters called Counterpoints or articles for the Commentary page. Please specify whether your article is intended as a letter, Counterpoint, or Commentary, although the final decision will be made by the paper.

All submissions must be exclusive in Minnesota and must include the writer’s name, address, occupation and telephone numbers (work and home) and letters must include the writer’s signature. Letters should be brief, up to 250 words. Counterpoints should be no longer than 600 words. Commentary articles should be kept to 750 words. Submissions should not be sent as attachments. Send letter to Editorial Department, Star Tribune, 425 Portland Av., Minneapolis, MN 55488. Submissions may be sent by fax to 612-673-4359. Letters also may be submitted via Internet to opinion@startribune.com.
