Roadless Areas Make a Difference

Timber sale threatens roadless areas

In April 2005, the Superior National Forest announced plans to clear-cut 16,000 acres along the Echo Trail corridor and Lake Vermilion. The Echo Trail timber sale area completely surrounds the Trout Lake Unit of the Boundary Waters and will leave lasting scars on the edge of the wilderness. It is the largest logging project on the forest in nearly a decade.

As many as eight roadless areas are affected: Agassa Lake, Baldpate Lake, Big Lake, Meander Lake, Echo River, Urho Creek, Picket Lake, and Wolf Lake.

An initial public comment period on the Echo Trail project closed May 9, 2005. The Friends submitted comments citing concerns about the impact of the logging project on roadless areas and recreation in the Echo Trail corridor.
