Baldplate Lake Unit
Approximate Acreage: 1,625
Percent Federal Ownership: 100%
The Baldpate Lake Unit lies north of the Echo Trail and is adjacent
to the BWCAW. The area’s ridges, bogs, and spectacular old pines
make the unit feel like "true wilderness."
The vegetation of the Baldpate Lake Unit is varied and includes
pine, aspen, and maple; bogs contain cedar, black spruce, and alder.
The area is popular for hunting, berry picking, and cross-country
skiing.
The Stuart portage crosses the unit from Big Lake to the BWCAW.
Along the portage there is a majestic 200-year-old white pine.
