The Big Lake/Portage River Unit is adjacent to the BWCAW and is defined by the Portage River on the unit’s eastern and northern edges.

The Big Lake area has few signs of human use, and one can find plenty of solitude once away from the Echo Trail. The Portage River is incredibly scenic and offers excellent opportunities for primitive recreation. Additionally, swampy areas along the river provide ample moose habitat.
