Cabin Creek Unit
Approximate Acreage: 8,360
Percent Federal Ownership: 80%
The Cabin Creek Unit is not adjacent to the BWCAW and is located
about eight miles directly north of Little Marais. Much of the area
is covered by northern hardwood forest, a rarity in the Superior
National Forest.
The hardwood forest is dominated by sugar maples, and the area even
contains a few large yellow birch. The topography of the area is
dramatic; elevations range from 1,600 feet to 1,930 feet. The view
overlooking Moose Creek is spectacular, highlighted by a stunning
grove of large cedars.
There are four lakes in the unit: Shoepack, Thunderbird, Bonanza,
and Moose. Thunderbird has two primitive campsites, while Shoepack
has one.
