East Otter Lake Unit

Approximate Acreage: 556
Percent Federal Ownership: 100%

The East Otter Lake Unit lies north of the Gunflint Trail and Poplar Lake. The area is extremely scenic with great opportunities for quiet recreation, especially hiking and canoeing.

The South Lake Trail, which runs through the center of the area, provides hiking access to the Border Route Trail and to South Lake on the U.S./Canada border. The area also can be reached from Birch Lake or Moss Lake.

Although some of the area’s 100-year-old forest was affected by the July 4, 1999 blowdown, scattered old white and red pines remain, as does a stand of old cedars south of East Otter Lake. The East Otter Lake roadless area also protects a stream that flows out of East Otter Lake into Duncan Lake in the BWCAW.
