Homer Lake Unit
Approximate Acreage: 5,687
Percent Federal Ownership: 95%
The Homer Lake Unit is adjacent to the BWCAW and directly south of
Brule Lake. The area is the heart of the Homer-Baker-Brule Lakes
area, which is a very popular canoe destination.
Homer Lake, located at the center of the unit, is an official entry
point to the BWCAW. In addition to providing access to canoe routes
throughout the Boundary Waters, there is a portage into Axe Lake.
Much of the Homer Lake unit is covered by lowland spruce forest,
some of which is quite old. This forest provides good habitat for
boreal owl and is potential “critical habitat” for Canada Lynx.
