Magnetic Lake Unit

Approximate Acreage: 1,133
Percent Federal Ownership: 100%

The Magnetic Lake Unit lies just west of Gunflint Lake and Magnetic Lake, along the U.S./Canada border. The northern boundary of the unit abuts the BWCAW. The area’s main recreational feature is a popular hiking trail that accesses Magnetic Rock.

The forest cover consists of aspen and birch, mixed with some jack pine and balsam fir. Blueberries, snowberries, reindeer moss, small ferns, and twin flower are common where bedrock is exposed. Michigan Lily can be found in some areas.

The area provides habitat for deer, wolf, and a variety of birds. The area is especially good for viewing black-backed and three-toed woodpeckers.
