Mine Lake Unit
Approximate Acreage: 1,209
Percent Federal Ownership: 100%
The Mine Lake Unit lies near the end of the Gunflint Trail, adjacent
to the BWCAW. The Kekekabic Trail, a rugged 40-mile hiking trail,
runs through the center of this unit. In addition to attracting
hikers, the “Kek” Trail is heavily used by wildlife, making watching
for wolves, bear, moose, and mink particularly rewarding.
There are three lakes in the area: Mine, Edith, and West Round. West
Round and Edith receive heavy canoe traffic as they are part of a
highly traveled BWCAW entry route (Brant Lake entry). Near the
unit’s southern boundary, there is an area of dense balsam fir,
which harbors ruffed group and snowshoe hare.
