North Arm Burntside Unit

Approximate Acreage: 3,243
Percent Federal Ownership: 80%

The North Arm Burntside Unit extends along the western shores of the North Arm of Burntside Lake, just outside of Ely. The area protects one of the few undeveloped shorelines on Burntside Lake.

The area is very rugged and scenic. About one-third of the unit is old-growth red and white pine forest, with an understory of maple, birch, and wildflowers. The area also contains a portage trail that runs from Burntside to Crab Lake in the BWCAW.
